  1. Arc de Triomphe, Paris

Towards the end of WWI, France built a ‘Second Paris’ near the capital city to confuse German pilots. It was located near the town of Maisons-Laffitte, on a stretch of the River Seine. As well as replicas of iconic landmarks, including the Arc de Triomphe, it even had sham streets lined with electric lights so that from the sky it would look like a real city. 2. Montmartre, Paris

Novelists James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway were drinking buddies in Paris- often picking fights on their drunken nights out. Famously, Hemingway took a urinal from his favourite bar in Paris and had it installed into his American abode, arguing that he had "pissed away" so much money into the urinal that he owned it #montmartre #basiliquedusacrecoeur #hemingway #karate #silhouette #instaart #paris #parisjetaime #parisian #topparisphoto #visitparis #parismaville @paris_tourisme #igersparis #loves_paris #igersfrance #instagram #forcedperspective #citytrip #wanderlust #travel #adventure #passionpassport #architecture #travelandlife #intrepidtravel #adventureinstagoodmyphoto #guardiancities #guardiantravelsnaps #bestintravel

In the distance behind the bridge is Tivoli, an amusement park commissioned by the King in 1843 so that the public could go amuse themselves and "think less about politics". Walt Disney visited Tivoli and felt inspired. Apart from in this game of noughts and crosses, all over Amsterdam you'll see 'XXX' (don't be cheeky now). It's actually from the Amsterdam coat of arms and either represents the cross that St Andrew was martyred on in the 1st century. Or it could symbolise the three kisses that Dutch people give when greeting #lonelyplanet @lonelyplanet #lpkids #amsterdam #amsterdamcity #traveladdict #amstergram #citytrip #thankyouamsterdam #igersamsterdam #loves_amsterdam #awesomeamsterdam #iamsterdam #wanderlust #travelgram #instaphoto #travel #adventure #game #windmill #degooyer #silhouette #bluesky #autumn #sunny #instaart #holiday #vacation #holland #netherlands #geefmijmaaramsterdam

Hi to the newbies- thanks for checking out my insta. Here's a new one from my trip to Paris at le weekend ?When the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre, the museum shut down for nine days, the French border was closed and all departing ships and trains were searched. The mystery wasn't solved until two years later though, when the thief turned out to be Vincenzo Peruggia, a carpenter who had been working at the museum and knew all the exits and escape routes. Peruggia had even helped build the glass case that the Mona Lisa was displayed in, so he knew how to get the painting out. At closing time, he hid in a broom closet and then walked out an exit after dark holding the Mona Lisa under his coat. 14. Tuscan town of San Gimignano, Italy

    View this post on Instagram

Ad| With a bit of imagination let’s pretend I’m in in the small Tuscan town of San Gimignano on a warm summer’s afternoon. Really, I’m in Stoke-On-Trent but stay with me…? ? Taking a break from walking the medieval streets I join the queue outside Gelateria Dondoli, home to Sergio Dondoli and Italy’s Best Gelato. I can hear Sergio joking around with the other customers as I get closer to the counter, he's known to be a bit of a showman, but I’m not laughing- a mild anxiety has kicked in as I begin the important decision of choosing a flavour. I change my mind three times in as many minutes but eventually I settle on one (I smirk as someone ahead of me orders vanilla. Fool). Then suddenly it’s my turn at the counter. My mind goes blank now I have a view of all the flavours. There must be about forty here, and there are combinations I’ve never heard like Biske Rata (white chocolate, pumpkin seed oil, cookies) and Champelmo (pink grapefruit and sparkling wine). Even the vanilla looks tempting. After inexplicably saying "ermmm" numerous times in quick succession I go into a trance and end up ordering all three flavours I kept changing my mind about. It’s too hard to choose and besides it is Italy’s Best Gelato afterall -coming here and only trying one flavour would be ridiculous. Plus I’ll be walking up Torre Grossa for the Tuscan views after this so those stairs will burn off the extra calories #BeMoreItalian #TravelToItaly @italiait
