The Gouldian finch from Australia for me is one of the most colourful of all finches. I was fortunate to have a model on the day that permitted me to come so close, sometimes times too close, as it decided to land on my head a number of times rather than to stay on his perch. #finch #photography #canon #broncolor #bird

This is the Victoria Crowned Pigeon, another work in progress for my new book on birds. The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is considered the largest of the living pigeon species, and can be found on mainland New Guinea. Mandrills form the largest social groups of any non-human primate, with a troop of 1,300 once recorded in the forests of Gabon. With their striking faces and eyes, they have evolved some of the most spectacular coloration of any mammalian species, the intensity of which signifies their social and sexual status. Sadly, it is not just their appearance that is appealing; mandrill meat is considered a delicacy in West Africa, and it is part of a growing trade, with tons of bushmeat being smuggled into western Europe every week. Here’s another Jacobin pigeon that we’ve been working on. The Jacobins are one of the oldest domestic pigeon breeds in the world, originating from India. Here’s a Black Jacobin Pigeon that we’ve been working on this week. The Jacobin received its European name because it’s hood of feathers resembles the garments worn by the Jacobin order of monks. This is a Red Splash Jacobin Pigeon that I photographed last week, it’s still a work in progress but I wanted to share it with you all. The Jacobin’s probably the most regal pigeon, having been kept by the likes of Charles Darwin and Queen Victoria. I photographed this bird for my book Endangered, ironically it was relatively easy to get access to such an endangered animal because it is popular in the pet trade, this one was bread in captivity. In the wild, Military Macaws remain monogamous for life, and as pets, they are exceptionally loyal and happy animals. Being such good companions puts them in huge demand from the pet industry, by many dealers take them from forests, rather than breed them in captivity. #macaw #militarymacaw #flying #bird #parrot #timflach #wildlife #studio #photography #portrait #broncolor #hasselblad

I’m posting this image on international Polar Bear day. When I was there last year I was so saddened to see these bears hungrily waiting for the freeze over of the Hudson Bay, Canada, so they could venture out onto the ice to hunt for seals. The experiences I had on that trip will always stay with me. The Fruit Bat, sometimes known as the Flying Fox or the Mega Bat. It is considered as one of the largest species of bats in the world. In popular culture you have Good Bat - Bad Bat, the super hero Batman, in the guise of a bat to put the fear of god into the criminal world verses the blood sucking vampire Count Dracula. How we understand images and transform them into meaning has been a passion of mine for many years. We are used to viewing images where the eyes are above the feet, so maybe this is why we entertain this image of the bat the wrong way up. As the philosopher Nagel put it, 'What is it like to be a bat? For me, there is something strange and yet familiar about this image, maybe because it reminds me of a dog doing a similar action. Shankar the Snow White Tiger. Blue eyes and white is an extremely rare colour combination, only one has been born in captivity in recent years. Mutkan the Golden Tabby Tiger. This image is from my book More Than Human, I photographed Mutkan at T.I.G.E.R.S in 2011. The colouring is a natural mutation in the wild, but has also been deliberately bred in zoos. The most common of all Madagascar’s lemurs (which include the crowned sifaka), the ring-tailed lemur is arguably their most iconic and persuasive ambassador, with its robber mask and luxuriant, banded tail. The spectacle of them sunbathing and bickering in zoo enclosures has helped focus public attention on their plight. Intensively studied since the 1960s, the ring-tailed lemur has nonetheless declined rapidly, and almost from under our noses—a deception that owes much to its success in captivity: today, there are more individuals in European zoos than in the wild. In the wild, these lemurs live in small social groups at low densities within isolated forest fragments. One of the largest populations, around three hundred strong, is in Berenty Reserve, southeast Madagascar. Who’d have thought that buying a bottle of wine with a real cork might help save this magnificent cat? Formally classed as critically endangered the worlds most threatened cat is inching back from the brink. The Iberian Lynx’s main hunting ground used to be the cork oak forests of Spain and Portugal, but unfortunately the switch to plastic corks has impacted on the Lynx’s main source of food, the wild rabbit. In 2011 I first met Djala, a western lowland gorilla, in captivity at the Aspinall foundation in Kent, UK. Several years later, after weeks of searching for him up and down a river in the Gabon’s Batéké Plateau National Park, I found my self face to face with the very same gorilla, who had been since released into the wild. I spend days travelling through the Mountains on the Philippine islands looking for this eagle, and in the end I photographed it at a rescue sanctuary. The Philippine Eagle has one of the largest wing spans of any eagle, at 2 metres, and is only found on the Philippine islands, where it is the national bird. The local people describe this animal as their ancestor, and call them ‘wild men of the mountains’ This Yunnan snub-nose monkey, who lives at a higher altitude than any primate in the dense bamboo thickets of the Henduan mountains in south-western China.
